Guerlain Spa, Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy
Deauville, France
The renewed spa experience balances preservation and modernity with a refined wellness experience rooted in heritage, nature and place.
A new chapter within a landmark hotel. Opened in 1912, Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy is one of Deauville’s defining hotels.
For the spa renovation, BLINK worked alongside Groupe Barrière and Guerlain to shape a wellness destination that honours the character of the hotel while reflecting Guerlain’s world of skincare, fragrance and ritual.
Our design concept was to refine and adapt what was already there, allowing the spa to feel renewed without disconnecting from the legacy of Le Normandy.
Inspired by the literary and coastal elegance of Deauville, the arrival space brings together restored panelling, preserved heritage details and Guerlain’s retail identity within a refined reception lounge.
Historic features were carefully retained, while the atmosphere was softened through a paler finish to the timber panelling, gentler forms in the new railings and ceiling structure, and a more layered approach to lighting.
At its centre, the perfume organ creates both a focal point and a moment of ritual, setting the tone for the wellness experience to follow.
The treatment rooms, named Serenity Chambers, were designed to move the guest experience away from the clinical and toward the restorative. Nature-inspired textures, softened forms and subtle brand references create spaces that feel intimate, composed and quietly luxurious.
The relaxation and experiential area, Ethereal Cove, was designed as a soft, immersive retreat. With no natural light, the space relies on palette, layering and atmosphere to create calm. Nature-inspired artwork, tonal materials and carefully composed lighting help transform an enclosed room into one that feels restful and private.
“At Le Normandy, the spa now feels lighter, calmer and more attuned to its next chapter, while remaining deeply connected to the hotel’s sense of time and place.”
Prior to embarking on the full Guerlain spa project, we worked with the Hotel owner to enhance the broader wellness setting, including the pool, gym and lower ground facilities.
By opening up an existing yoga studio, we enlarged the poolside relaxation area, an important requirement for the hotel, especially when at full capacity. We also completely reworked the basement, turning the entire area from an under-used facility into a welcoming, more generous sauna and hammam experience.
To preserve what was architecturally distinctive, we reinterpreted the existing wall motifs, characteristic of the local architecture, with a muted tone-on-tone treatment.
The pool itself also required a light-touch response. Because of the fragility of the original structure, new finishes had to be laid over the existing tiles rather than removing them. This approach allowed the space to be updated while respecting the fabric of the building.
The project became a close collaboration between the owner, brand, design team and local architect. From the beginning, there was a shared understanding of what needed to be preserved, what could be transformed, and how the design should evolve.
It was this mutual respect for the hotel, the partnership and the place that gave the project its alignment. We hope future guests will enjoy a spa experience shaped by the traditions of Barrière, the world of Guerlain and the enduring spirit of Normandy.
