Today we are celebrating designing for drinks. F&B design is all about creating an atmosphere and an experience. A bar and its menu of cocktails might be instagrammable, but that is never the sole aim. The real power is in the emotion created by the design or the flavours tailored by the mixologist. We imagine spaces for sensations - the joy of socialising, intimate romance or moments of quiet contentment. ‘For me, it has to be Jigger & Pony in Singapore. Not only is the cocktail menu an interesting twist on the classics, but the bartenders' energy and guest approach add to the bar ambience, and when combined, make it such a great place to drink and relax.’

An appreciation for the rich artisan community of

An appreciation for the rich artisan community of Thailand was integral to our design for the Millennium Hilton Bangkok, on the river Chao Phraya River. Inspired by the elements of the river itself, along with the colours of the riverscape environment around it - we commissioned a series of water motif screens. The screens delineate the cafe seating from the lobby seating area to create more intimate relaxation areas and zone the spaces. AUSARA were the perfect choice for this design element. They strive to enrich millennia’s old craft traditions by adding new material and techniques, which aligns perfectly with the narrative of this interior renovation.

The lighting feature for a recent project in Bangk

The lighting feature for a recent project in Bangkok took inspiration from the Thai cultural festivals, Yi Peng and Loi Krathong, where lanterns bring luck for the future as they float to the skies. The design incorporates these seemingly drifting lanterns creating a memorable ambience. Outside, the terrace water feature echoes the baskets of lights that float out to the river as part of these celebrations. 'Lighting is one of those intangibles that has a powerful effect on people. People can have a physical side effect to bad lighting that makes them look and feel sick. Good lighting, however, is like an invisible layer of magic that drapes over the space. It not only elevates the way things look but leaves a subconscious lasting impression in our minds.' Louisa Kim

Engawa is a Japanese terrace concept that brings the inside, outside, people and nature together. The use of traditional Japanese engawa in the design draws some of the inside space outside. At the ROKU, the tea terrace of the riverside restaurant connects the interiors to the grounds, as connecting patios and corridors guide you through outside spaces while keeping you feeling entirely within the resort.
